The Guyana government plans to expand Eugene F. Correia International Airport (Ogle Airport). This follows major developments in Guyana’s aviation and tourism sectors. The airport, which has become a major travel hub in South America, receives more than 200 arrivals per day.
The news was revealed during the launch of Caribbean Airlines’ first flight from Ogle Airport to Paramaribo, Suriname on Sunday. The new flights will operate twice a week on Sundays and Fridays. On Sundays flight BW383 departs Ogle at 11:55am and on Fridays at 10:45am. BW384 departs Suriname at 12:50 PM on Sundays and at 13:50 PM on Fridays.
Bishop Juan Edghill, Minister of Public Works, gave the background to this decision. He also explained that operators providing airport services have applied for permission to expand their fleets to meet increasing demand. As the number of flights will increase and new routes may be opened, permission for expansion has been obtained from the operating company. Caribbean Airlines was one of these operators and their new flight service is an example of their growing route network through Guyana.
The Minister also said there would be several changes that would benefit passengers and crew. There will be:
- Additional seating amenities
- More variety of duty-free shops
- Executive lounge for executive travel
- Longer runway.
He also noted that it is important for domestic airports to carry out regular maintenance to ensure they can handle large aircraft and provide the best service. Additionally, to meet growing demand, the Government of Guyana has plans to build a second terminal at Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
