Israel has waged a massive military operation in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip that has killed at least 39,400 people, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry.
According to Hamas, Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iran's new President Masoud Pezekian, who took office on Tuesday.
Musa Abu Marzouk, a member of the group's political bureau, said it was a “cowardly act” that “cannot go unanswered,” while Sami Abu Zuhri, a senior Hamas official, said the group would “continue to follow its own path.”
Iran's Foreign Ministry said Haniya's “martyrdom” would “strengthen the deep and unbreakable bonds between Tehran, the Palestinians and the resistance,” state media reported.
The Russian and Turkish foreign ministries also condemned the attack.
