According to experts, analysis showing the potential financial benefits of surveillance investments provides the common language needed to move the debate forward.

The World Health Organization (WHO) calculated the average return on investment in disease surveillance for 17 countries with a medium level of food safety system development.

Results show that every dollar invested in improving foodborne disease surveillance capacity can generate a benefit of $46.60 over 10 years for a country moving from Joint External Evaluation (JEE) Level 3 to Level 4. Benefits range from $1 to $124 for every dollar invested in included countries.
