Homemade Greek Seasoning

One of the best ways to make healthy eating easier is to keep homemade essentials close at hand. Simple DIY spice blends and sauces take little effort but can make your meals much more delicious. This Greek seasoning is one of my staples to keep in my pantry!

Premade seasoning mixtures often contain fillers, preservatives, added sugar, or ingredients you might not find in your kitchen. Making your own is very simple and allows you to choose exactly what you use and what you don’t. Plus, DIY versions often taste better than ones that have been sitting on store shelves for months.

What is Greek Seasoning?

Greek seasoning is a flavorful blend of Mediterranean herbs traditionally used to add depth to meats, vegetables, sauces, and marinades. It combines classic Greek flavors like oregano, basil, dill, garlic, and rosemary. The result is a delicious seasoning that works in a variety of recipes.

Oregano is one of the most popular Greek flavors and adds a spicy kick (and it’s not just used in Italian seasoning!). Then add herbs like basil, parsley, dill, thyme, and rosemary to bring out all the flavors. Garlic and onion powder give this blend a flavorful base that makes it versatile, while a hint of cinnamon adds a little warmth.

It’s also an easy way to include a variety of micronutrients, antioxidants, and antibacterial compounds in your daily diet. People have been using herbs for thousands of years not only to enhance the taste of their dishes but also to maintain their overall health.

Why you should make your own seasoning

I’ve started making more of my own pantry staples because it’s an easy way to simplify ingredients without sacrificing flavor. And now that we have 7 kids, it’s cheaper to buy them in bulk and mix them ourselves! Seasoning blends are one of the easiest swaps because they only take minutes to make and last for months.

This Greek seasoning is one of those recipes that has become a kitchen staple. I love having jars on hand because they instantly upgrade a simple meal. Plain chicken breasts, grilled vegetables, and even basic salads get an instant flavor upgrade with our homemade seasoning.

Customization is also easy. If you like garlic, you can add more. If you prefer a stronger herbal flavor, adjust the amount of oregano, basil, or dill. Homemade recipes are flexible and one of the best parts of cooking from scratch.

How to Use Greek Seasoning

This seasoning is very versatile and works well in both simple weeknight meals and more complex recipes. Sprinkle it over chicken before grilling, mix it into burger patties, or use it to season grilled vegetables like zucchini, squash, and asparagus.

One of my favorite methods? Add olive oil, salt, and Greek seasoning to diced potatoes, mix, and bake. The herbs create a crunchy, flavorful coating that rivals restaurant dishes.

You can mix it into homemade salad dressing, drizzle it over eggs, or mix it into Greek yogurt for a quick and easy dip. It’s a great way to add flavor without complicated sauces or additional ingredients.

For an easy meal prep option, try this blend as the base for a simple Greek chicken marinade. Mix Greek seasoning with olive oil and fresh lemon juice, then marinate and grill the chicken. The result is tender, flavorful chicken with bright Mediterranean flavour.
