Tattoo artists have been working underground in Korea for decades now.

For 34 years, only licensed doctors could get tattoos, and breaking the law could result in heavy fines or jail time.

Last September, lawmakers legalized tattoos by non-medical professionals following an ongoing campaign by artists challenging the fear and harassment they face.

The BBC came to Seoul, where tattooists from across the country gathered to explain how and why the law changed.
