
Cuba’s grid operator has restored power intermittently since the country’s grid collapsed on March 16. It comes amid a US-imposed oil blockade that has crippled fuel, food and medicine shortages on the already struggling island.
Several small groups of residents across Havana have recently staged pot-banging demonstrations to protest extended blackouts. A series of widespread power outages that lasted hours or days sparked rare violent protests in northern Cuba on March 14, with buildings set on fire.
President Donald Trump has hinted at a possible takeover of the island in recent months, saying at a White House event in early March that the island was “ready to fall.”
