How to turn off Apple Intelligence on iPhone

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to avoid AI when you open your phone or laptop. As soon as I started this article in Google Docs, I was immediately offered the AI assistance I needed to write (which I didn’t accept). And with the launch of Apple Intelligence, this now applies to iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

But if you haven’t found much value in the Apple Intelligence features released so far, you’re not alone. According to a recent survey, about three-quarters of iPhone owners don’t know what all the fuss is about. It’s also worth keeping in mind that these AI add-ons will take up 7GB of local storage (and counting) on any device you want to use them on.

The good news is that Apple Intelligence is opted in and is relatively easy to disable. This is not something every company does using AI tools (just look at Google and Microsoft). So, if you find features like authoring tools and false notification summaries unnecessary for your needs, you can turn them off.

Here’s how to turn off specific features of Apple Intelligence, assuming you already have them turned on. If you really don’t like it, here’s how to turn it off completely.

(The steps listed below were tested on an iPhone 15 Pro Max running iOS 18.2. Similar options are also available for iPadOS and macOS.)

Turn off individual Apple Intelligence features

You can turn off summaries for individual apps or disable them completely.

Writing tools and image creation can be managed through Screen Time.

Most, but not all, Apple Intelligence features can be disabled individually. open it setting You’ll find a dedicated menu on your iPhone. Apple Intelligence & Siri. After that, it depends on what you want to disable.

ChatGPT

faucet ChatGPT extension Enables or disables additional AI smart features that ChatGPT can add to Siri when requesting a response.

alarm

AI notification summaries, which have recently gotten Apple into trouble, can also be turned off individually. In iOS Settings, select: alarm > Notification Summary If you want to turn the feature off, you can also enable it for certain apps on the same screen, but not for others.

Writing tools/image creation

You can turn off writing tools and image creation, but you’ll need to follow these steps: screen time In settings:

  • faucet Content and privacy restrictions.
  • enable Content and privacy restrictions.
  • faucet Intelligence and Siri.
  • faucet Create image or writing toolsthen not allowed.

This is a bit of a clumsy fix. This is actually to prevent children from cheating on their homework. But it works. I don’t see a pop-up option to rewrite the text, and I can’t create a new Genmoji. When you open the Image Playground app on iOS, the option to create new photos is blocked (but you can still access previously saved photos).

Message priority

Apple Mail’s AI-based message prioritization is another feature that can be disabled on its own, or more accurately hidden from view.

  • Inside the Mail app inboxTap the three dots in the top right corner.
  • Switch to List view and disable Show priority.

Your inbox will be back to the way it was before Apple Intelligence launched.

There isn’t much in terms of Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.2 that you can’t specifically disable. Photos has organizing tools and Focus has an Intelligent Breakthrough feature, but you can easily ignore these options if you don’t need them.

Turn off Apple Intelligence completely on your iPhone

Disabling Apple Intelligence doesn’t remove AI models from your phone.

If you don’t want anything to do with Apple Intelligence and have already enabled it, you can turn it off completely.

  • open it setting > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  • To completely enable or completely disable all Apple Intelligence features currently available on your iPhone, look for the Apple Intelligence toggle switch at the top.

When you first turn this toggle switch on (assuming you do), iOS downloaded the necessary AI models to your phone for local processing. These models, which take up around 7GB of space, will remain in future iPhones regardless of whether Apple Intelligence is enabled or not.

If you want to disable Apple Intelligence and To free up space used by your local iOS model, you’ll need to reset your iPhone and start over from scratch without enabling Apple Intelligence during setup. You can do this in Settings by selecting: General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and SettingsOf course, this will erase everything on your phone, so be sure to safely back up any important data.

At least for now, you have plenty of control over which Apple Intelligence features are enabled. But we know there are a lot more AI upgrades on the way, so we’ll have to wait and see if Apple Intelligence remains an additional option for the iPhone.
