Huge plume of volcanic ash rises after Mount Dukono erupts in Indonesia

Last Friday, Indonesia’s Mount Dukono volcano erupted, killing three hikers, including two foreigners and a local resident.

Mount Dukono is an active volcano on Halmahera Island, east of Sulawesi. According to the Indonesian Volcano Investigation Agency, it exploded at 07:41 local time (22:41 GMT on Thursday), spewing a plume of volcanic ash up to 10 km into the air.

Rescue workers found all survivors among the 20 hikers missing after the explosion. Most people were evacuated from the mountain and are being treated at hospitals, but two porters remained to help search for bodies.

Officials said the group, including nine Singaporeans, was hiking the volcano despite an existing climbing ban.
