Sometimes a disruptor comes along and changes the status quo. They resist the big boys. No, they become one of the big boys. Welcome to ‘Super League Giant Club’ Hull KR.
There aren’t many sports that can say that four teams dominate the competition like Super League. Add to this the fact that one in four Bradford Bulls players haven’t reached the top job in 11 years.
Twenty-seven grand finals have passed with these four names taking the trophy one after another. Leeds have enjoyed continued success and so has St Helens. There has been no new name on the trophy for 21 years.
The list includes Wigan Warriors, St Helens, St Helens, Bradford Bulls, St Helens, Bradford, Leeds Rhinos, Bradford, St Helens, Leeds, Leeds, Leeds, Wigan, Leeds, Included were Leeds, Wigan, St Helens, Leeds, Wigan, Leeds, Wigan, St Helens, St Helens, St Helens, St Helens, Wigan, Wigan.
Then something happened in the 28th Super League Grand Final. There has been change, there has been change, and competition will never be the same.
Hull KR became the fifth name on the list.
Hull KR created their own treble history by thwarting Wigan’s bid for a ‘three-in-a-row’ of three successive Grand Final wins.
They won the League Leaders’ Shield and Challenge Cup. They finished first. Despite this, Wigan went into the competition as favourites.
Everyone said that experience pays off. Well, Hull KR tore up that script and then some with a 24-6 win that changed the course of the club’s history.
Wigan were the heavyweights and Hull KR were the challengers for the belt. They took it in a certain style.
What’s always interesting about a rematch? There is always someone trying to assert their continued dominance and someone with a huge point to prove.
Robbins proved their point.
On a high note they join the top tier of the Super League. The Bradford Bulls did it in 2003. St Helens did it in 2006. Leeds Rhinos did it in 2015. Wigan Warriors did it in 2024. Now Hull KR have done it in 2025.
The question of whether they could do it on the biggest stage has disappeared. They defeated the giant and became giants in the process.
This is the club that has experienced the most painful heartbreak. After losing to Salford drop-goals and being relegated to the Championship in 2016, the Robins have rebuilt, come back stronger and made a memorable name for themselves.
“We’ve had a lot of lows, but we haven’t had any in 40 years and we’ve had three lows this year,” said owner Neil Hudgell.
“It’s a testament to Willie (Peters) and the group to make history and put a new name on the trophy.
“I’m not a great tipster. I’ve always gotten the information wrong, but I felt it was time to get informed.
“I’m really happy and proud, Mikey Lewis, (Elliot) Minchella. The boys had some struggles, but they responded.”
Too many clubs have tried before and failed. Hull FC have a try. Warrington Wolves have a try. Castleford Tigers had a try. Salford Red Devils have a try. The Catalans Dragons gave it a try. Everyone fell at the last hurdle.
The question for Hull KR now is not whether they are one of the big boys, but now it is about what size they want.
They came to say, ‘And something new.’ Now, we are becoming a team that can ‘stay still’.
