Ian Watson: Huddersfield Giants resign as manager with immediate effect ahead of Super League clash with Leigh Leopards | Rugby League News

Huddersfield Giants have sacked manager Ian Watson with immediate effect ahead of their match against Leeds Leopards on Saturday.

Watson joined Huddersfield ahead of the 2021 season and signed a new four-year contract until 2022, but will not be managing the club when Lee is brought in. Live on Sky Sports Mix at 3pm on Saturday.

Huddersfield suffered a crushing 48-0 defeat to Warrington Wolves on Friday, with Watson describing his performance as “embarrassing”.

“Following the monthly board meeting scheduled for today, the club has decided to sack Ian Watson as manager with immediate effect,” a statement from the Huddersfield Giants read.

“Luke Robinson will take charge of the team ahead of the weekend's Bet Fred Super League tie at Leigh. Neither the club nor Ian will comment further.”

Huddersfield reached the 2022 Challenge Cup final, finishing third, but have struggled since.

Last Friday's defeat at Warrington was the team's seventh defeat in eight games and has been a disorganised season.

“I don't think there are any words to express my disappointment,” Watson said after the game.

“It's a shame of who we are as a professional rugby league club. It's not good enough.

“One thing I will say is, we've had a lot of really sick people this week. It's not enough for the organization we want to be.

“We talk about being a good club, but we're not willing to put in the effort to be that. There are people who have been really sick. They've been tested in the emergency room.”
