Ibrahima Konate transfer news: Defender moves closer to joining Real Madrid as talks with La Liga giants continue | soccer news

Ibrahima Konate is in talks to join Real Madrid after it was confirmed he would leave Liverpool as a free agent.

Sky Sports News It is understood that negotiations are ongoing and it is looking increasingly likely that the defender will join Real, but any potential move will depend on the ongoing presidential election.

Konate announced that he will leave Anfield when his contract expires this summer after failing to agree a new contract.

The France international has made 183 appearances for Manchester United since joining from RB Leipzig in 2021, helping the Reds lift the Premier League, FA Cup and two League Cups.

Konate’s departure adds to Liverpool’s ‘big summer’

Vinnie O’Connor on Sky Sports News:

“Finance is not an issue. We have done a pretty good job of balancing the books over the years.

“Yes, they spent big last season, but the net spending wasn’t that big because of the players they were able to offload.

“In that respect they are in good form, but they need to add to the squad.

Sky Sports News reporter Vinny O’Connor discusses the restructuring Liverpool could undergo if Andoni Iraola is appointed as new manager.

“If you look at the squad, they need to get up to speed with their wide forward areas. Yan Diomande is the player they have identified, but he faces competition.

“If you look at the backline, (Jeremy) Jacquet has come in, (Giovanni) Leoni is already there but he’s been out all season with an ACL (injury), so those are two young players at centre-back.”

“Konate has also left. I wonder if they need more experience there, especially with the injury history of Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley.

“Another area that will help Iraola is sixth place. Ryan Gravenburch has had success, but his workload has been enormous.

“It’s a massive summer for Liverpool and important decisions need to be made if they are to play the brand of football they want going forward.”
