India vs Bangladesh, 1st Test: Ravichandran Ashwin leads hosts to 280-run win in series opener | Cricket News

Ravichandran Ashwin took his 37th five-wicket haul as India beat Bangladesh by 280 runs to win the first Test with five sessions remaining.

Ashwin took 6-88 and Ravindra Jadeja 3-58 as the spin duo crushed Bangladesh in Chennai, edging the visitors to 234 runs as they won the match by an incredible 515 runs.

India took the required six wickets in the opening over on Day 4 to take a 1-0 lead ahead of the final match of the two-Test series in Kanpur on Friday.

Ashwin, who scored his sixth Test hundred in the first innings and was named man of the match in the Test at home, said: “The first innings was an opportunity to dig deep and Jadeja helped us navigate the difficult phase of that innings.

“It was a special blow and it didn’t really hit me until the second day. I’m happy to have picked up a few wickets today.”

Bangladesh, who resumed the game at 158-4, put up a strong resistance in the first hour of play. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and veteran all-rounder Shakib al Hasan put on 36 runs while India failed to get a wicket in the first hour.

Shakib missed a crucial chance from Jadeja when Rishabh Pant failed to catch the ball cleanly, but otherwise the Bangladesh duo did their best to prevent India from making an early entry into the lower batting order.

Four balls after the drinks break, Ashwin caught Shakib (25) at short leg to make the breakthrough. Jadeja caught Litton Das at slip to get a run and Ashwin completed five fours when Mehidy Hasan Miraz holed out at long-on for eight runs.

Shanto ran out of patience and hit Jadeja hard, scoring 82. He faced 127 balls and hit eight fours and three sixes to top-score the tourists.

Ashwin got his sixth and Taskin Ahmed (5 runs) quickly followed his captaincy, before Jadeja bowled Hasan Mahmud (7 runs) in the 63rd over to seal a one-sided win. Bangladesh lost their last six wickets for 40 runs from 45 deliveries, and suffered a crushing defeat 10 minutes before lunch.
