IndiGo, the low-cost carrier that dominates India's domestic market, has ordered its first wide-body jet, paving the way for its foray into long-haul flying.
The airline expects to take delivery of its first of 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft in 2027.
Indigo also secured the rights to purchase an additional 70 A350s.
The company did not specify potential long-haul destinations in its announcement Thursday, but said the aircraft would allow it to “expand our business and further expand our network.”
“Through its diverse cities in India, IndiGo will be able to connect with the world,” the airline said.
IndiGo's cooperative order book
Indigo currently has a fleet of 350 aircraft, but made headlines last year when it placed an order for 500 Airbus narrow-body aircraft, which the aircraft manufacturer said was the largest order in commercial aviation history.
Indigo's orders for cooperative aircraft are expected to reach nearly 1,000 over the next decade, and this long-haul order will add to that number.
