Two companies in the soy sector are leveraging technology to eliminate deforestation from their supply chains.
Agricultural giant Bunge jointly Tested a traceability platform using blockchain technology. We produce sustainable soybeans through Bangkok Produce Merchandising, a subsidiary of Charoen Pokphand Foods.
The platform will allow CP Foods to track soybeans from farm origin, processing and transportation to destination delivery, bringing the soybean production process closer to zero deforestation, the company said.
So far, 185,000 tonnes of deforestation-free soybean meal has been shipped by a Brazilian company and is heading to Thailand, allowing CP Foods to trace its ingredient supply chain. Three additional vessels carrying an additional 180,000 tonnes of soybean meal are expected to be loaded by July 2024, the company said.
CP Foods aims to connect suppliers and partners with blockchain-based traceability solutions. According to CEO Paisarn Kruawongvanich, it is ensuring transparency with farmers around the world and throughout the supply chain. “In the early stages of our partnership with Bunge, we shipped our first container of soybean meal, verified to be fully traceable and deforestation-free, from farm to destination in Thailand for CP Foods,” he said.
CP Foods' goal is to achieve zero deforestation levels by 2025.
The collaboration began in October 2023 when the two companies announced a partnership to develop research into blockchain tracking solutions.
Soy supply chains have been linked to deforestation and have been criticized for not doing enough to address the problem. A recent report released by the Accountability Framework Initiative found that 881 companies disclosed their impact on the supply chain of at least one product, and about half said they were working to reduce deforestation.
Other companies in the industry have made similar efforts to address ingredient supply chain issues. ADM recently shipped its first vessel. We supply verified and fully traceable soybeans from the U.S. to Europe and plan to expand into other key regions across North America.
