BBC Senior International Correspondent Orla Guerin joins specialist police on a mission to Colombia’s cocaine heartland, tasked with destroying a crude cocaine lab hidden deep in the jungle.
The Jungle Commandos, a police unit armed by the United States and originally trained by the British SAS, were looking for a laboratory that was little more than a shack with drums of chemicals and fresh coca leaves ready to be turned into a paste.
Major Cristian Cedano Díaz, a 16-year veteran of the war on drugs, told the BBC that cocaine labs could be quickly rebuilt “in just one day”.
Colombia has been criticized by US President Trump for not doing enough to tackle the drug trade, but President Gustavo Petro claimed his government had seized the largest amount of drugs in history.
