One person was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon, Israel’s Health Ministry said. It comes a day after the two countries signed an agreement for lasting peace.
Lebanon’s state news agency reported that an Israeli drone struck the southern village of Nabati-eh al-Foqa, and that at least two people were injured in further attacks in the area.
The Israeli military said it had carried out a drone strike against an individual who had posed a threat to its forces, without providing further details.
On Friday, the leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group, which did not participate in negotiations on the U.S.-brokered agreement, rejected it and accused the Beirut government of undermining Lebanese sovereignty.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the agreement reached in Washington was “historic” and a “blow to Iran and Hezbollah.”
Under the four-point framework, Israel would withdraw its troops from the southern Litani region and the Lebanese army would assume exclusive control of the vacated territory.
However, Israeli troops are allowed to remain stationed in an expanded security zone in southern Lebanon.
On Saturday, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem accused the Lebanese government of making harmful concessions.
“Washington’s basic agreement is humiliating, shameful and a surrender of sovereignty. This agreement is null and void,” he said.
Kassem criticized the clause linking Israel’s withdrawal with the group’s disarmament, saying it crossed “all red lines.”
He accused Lebanese authorities of making “serious mistakes” that “could even lead to the annexation of the land” and pledged that Hezbollah would continue its armed resistance.
On Saturday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Israeli troops had been ordered to prepare for an extended stay in a security zone up to 10 kilometers (6 miles) inside Lebanese territory.
Lebanon was drawn into the conflict on March 2 when Iran-backed Hezbollah launched missiles at Israel in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike that killed Iran’s top leader.
Israel responded with airstrikes across Lebanon and a ground invasion of the south.
At least 4,192 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in Lebanon since the start of hostilities, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. Lebanon said more than 11,600 people were injured and more than 1.2 million people were displaced.
Israel said 36 soldiers and four civilians were killed on both sides of the border.
A US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon on April 16 failed to stop the fighting.
Israel and Lebanon agreed in June to renew a fragile ceasefire, which the United States said would help guide the creation of a “pilot zone where the Lebanese military would have exclusive control of the territory to the exclusion of all non-state actors.”
