Israeli Army Fails Mission to Protect Kibbutz from Hamas

Israel's defense minister has called for a national investigation into the events leading up to the Hamas attack on October 7, admitting that the military failed in its duty to protect the small community in which 101 people were killed.

Yoav Galant gave his opinion in the first of a series of official Israeli military reports, after revealing how the army conducted its operation at Kibbutz Berri, near the Gaza Strip border fence.

More people have been killed in the kibbutz than in any other Israeli community since gunmen crossed from Gaza and stormed their homes on October 7.

Mr. Galant said an independent national inquiry was needed into the actions of all those in power, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, regarding how Hamas had grown in power and capability over the past decade.

Last fall's unprecedented attacks left some 1,200 people dead and 251 taken hostage in the Gaza Strip.

According to the Hamas-run Health Ministry, this led to a massive Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip that has killed more than 38,000 Palestinians.

Kibbutz members say it is important that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledge that they failed to protect them, and they are also demanding a national investigation.
