One town in northern Italy began celebrating Carnival with an annual Orange Battle, where people throw fruit at each other for fun.
The historic Carnival in Ivrea, an old medieval city near Turin, commemorates the legend of Violetta, the daughter of a miller who rescued her people from a tyrant starving the city.
The colorful battle commemorates the uprising and is fought on foot by nine teams representing the rebelling people, while orange throwers on horse-drawn carriages represent the feudal army.
Oranges used in the event are not suitable for sale and will be collected and used as fertilizer after the event, organizers said.
