Ivan Toni transfer: Saudi Pro League club approaches Brentford for England striker | Football News

Brentford have received an approach from a Saudi Arabian club for striker Ivan Toni.

The club was known as Al Ahly, which included Riyad Mahrez, Edouard Mendy and Roberto Firmino.

There have been offers but the Premier League side have yet to accept anything and as things stand, there is nothing close to an agreement.

The 28-year-old was not selected for Brentford's squad for their Premier League opener against Crystal Palace on Sunday, not only because of the interest, but also because he had not completed a full pre-season.

Toni had a break after representing England at Euro 2024 and despite his absence, Brentford won 2-1 thanks to goals from strikers Brian Mbeumo and Yoan Wissa.

Bees manager Thomas Frank explained why Toney was left out of the team. Sky Sports: “There is a lot going on with Ivan and there is interest in his transfer. Because of all that, we have decided not to include him in the squad.

Highlights of the Premier League match between Brentford and Crystal Palace

“It's a classic story. We couldn't give him too much the day before. He was a fantastic player for us, but we showed last year in particular that we can do without him.”

Asked if this was the last time Tony would wear a Brentford shirt, he added: “Who knows? There's interest, but nothing close to it.”

Super Sunday experts have reacted to the news that Tony has been ruled out of Brentford's clash with Crystal Palace.

Sky Sports' Jamie Redknapp on Super Sunday:

“Tony has a year left on his contract so it's Brentford's last chance to give him real money and he's considering his options.

“A year ago he had a lot more going for him than he does now and we thought he would go to Arsenal but that didn't happen. Chelsea looked at him but didn't select him but I think Saudi Arabia is an opportunity for him. There is interest there.

“Or he could sit and wait until his contract is up and then leave as a free agent next year, but he probably wants to do something now.”

All instances of Tony successfully converting a no-look penalty for Brentford in the Premier League

Sky Sports' Ron Walker at the Gtech Community Stadium:

“At around 12.45pm, attention turned to Gtech as Tony's name was omitted from the team sheet, with Brentford fans fearing the worst but hoping it was just a minor issue or some other innocuous reason that kept him out.

“With Frank's interview just minutes away, it was up to the manager to break the bad news that Tony had not played and that it might have been his last game for the club.

“Frank was keeping his cards very secret, saying in his pre-game press conference on Friday that Tony was fit and ready to play.

“Now we know he was aware of the interest in him from then on and probably knew he wouldn't be playing on Sunday.”
