Japan Airlines Trials Clothing Rental to Encourage Travelers to Pack Light: Travel Weekly

Japan Airlines (JAL) will pilot a clothing rental program next summer.

The Any Wear, Anywhere program is aimed at international tourists visiting Japan, and the airline is promoting it as having the potential to help them reduce their baggage load.

JAL will test Any Wear, Anywhere from July 5 to August 31 next year. Customers will be able to select clothes on the program’s website. Reservations must be made one month in advance, the airline said. The clothes will then be delivered to the customer’s Japanese hotel on the day of arrival.

JAL said the initiative is part of its sustainability efforts. During the pilot period, the airline will monitor the weight of checked baggage on flights and ensure that the expected emissions reductions are realized.

For this program, JAL will source used and surplus clothing inventory from Japanese company WeFabrik, whose mission is to reduce clothing waste through reuse.
