

South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams, who featured in all three World Cup group stage matches this summer, has died aged 25.
The cause of death is not yet known.
“It is with deep shock and heavy hearts that I have learned of the passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25,” Sports Minister Gaten McKenzie said in a statement.
“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents. Our country is mourning along with his family, teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect to a fully-fledged Bafana Bafana international.”
Meanwhile, FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his condolences in a statement, saying, “I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of South African midfielder Jayden Adams, just weeks after playing in South Africa’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign.”
“My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of FIFA and everyone in the global football community, go out to his family, friends and team-mates. The Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace.”
His club Mamelodi Sundowns also confirmed the midfielder’s pass in a statement.
“The Chairman and the Motsepe family, the Board of Directors, technical team, players, management, staff, supporters of Mamelodi Sundowns FC and the entire Yellow Nation send our deepest condolences to Jayden’s family and friends as they mourn his passing.
“We pray that Almighty God will comfort and strengthen the Addams family, his friends, and all who knew him.”
“SAFPU is devastated by the sudden death of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams,” the South African Football Players’ Union said in a statement.
“Jaden recently represented South Africa at the 2026 World Cup, carrying the hopes of his nation with pride, courage and excellence. His death is an immeasurable loss to his family, team-mates, club, the world of football and the country as a whole. We send our deepest condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana and all those he touched.”
South Africa exited the tournament in the round of 32 after losing to co-hosts Canada, a match in which Adams did not play.
