Joe Newell appointed Hibernian captain, signs new contract until summer 2027 | Football News

Hibernian midfielder Joe Newell has signed a new contract with the club until the summer of 2027 and has been appointed captain for the upcoming season.

The 31-year-old has made 189 appearances and scored 10 goals since joining the Easter Road team in 2019, winning the club's Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year awards in 2023.

He previously captained Hibs on 29 occasions and was handed the captaincy on a permanent basis by new manager David Gray after Paul Hanlon left the club in the summer.

“I am delighted to extend my time at this great club,” he said. “Everyone who knows me knows how much Hibs means to me and I am grateful to be able to dedicate my future here.

“Being appointed club captain is the greatest honour of my career so far. I've been looking at the list of former Hibs captains and to be added to that list and follow in the footsteps of some of the greatest players is an absolute privilege and means the world to me.

“We are all looking forward to the new season and as captain I will do my best to ensure we are successful this year.”

Hibernian head coach David Gray is looking forward to a new season after taking charge at Easter Road.

Manager Gray said: “First of all, I am delighted that Joe has committed his future to the club.

“He is a great example to the younger players at the club, he is an outstanding player and has maintained a high level of consistency over the years.

“Appointing Joe as club captain was an easy decision for me. From playing with him to coaching him, I know what he is like as a competitor and leader both on and off the pitch. He is a great character around the dressing room, understands the club thoroughly and has a real connection with our supporters.
