John Higgins became only the second snooker player to reach his 1,000th career century despite crashing out of the British Open at Brentwood.
The 49-year-old Scot set new records in the quarter-finals against Mark Allen, scoring 108 and 105 in the third and fifth frames respectively.
But it wasn’t enough of a win to boost their hopes of advancing to the round of 16. Allen, who scored 100 points in the first round, showed solid form in a tough final to win 4-3.
Ronnie O’Sullivan is the only player to reach the four-figure century milestone, having achieved it in the final frame of his win over Neil Robertson in the 2019 Players Championship final.
Earlier, Judd Trump set up a quarter-final clash with China’s Wu Yize after coming from behind to win 4-2 over the judges.
The world number one won three frames in a row to earn 101 points, putting him well on the verge of joining O’Sullivan and Higgins in the millennium club.
Mark Selby won 4-3 against Shi Jiahui to advance to the quarter-finals against India’s Ishpreet Singh Chadha, who also claimed a decisive win over China’s He Guoqiang in the final frame.
