England captain Jos Buttler has promised a thorough review will be carried out following his team's poor T20 World Cup run that ended in a semi-final defeat to India.
When England won the 2022 tournament, they had beaten the same opposition at the same stage in Adelaide by 10 wickets, but this time things were different.
Chasing a target of 172 on a difficult batting pitch, Butler's team hit 103 and suffered a bitter 68-run defeat, leaving the Caribbean with a bitter defeat.
Their efforts in the tournament are at least an improvement on their previous title defence, which was a disastrous 50-over World Cup campaign last year when they lost six of their nine games, but there are still questions to answer.
England proved much stronger against associates Oman, Namibia and the United States, but underperformed against their more famous rivals, losing to Australia, South Africa and India during the tournament.
“We will review everything and make a plan. Of course.” Buttler spoke to reporters after his team's elimination from the World Cup.
“The way we play, the personnel, the style of cricket, we need to look at what we need to do better as a team.
“After a loss like that, I was ready to process and get some space to review not only this game but the past few months.
“I think there is a lot of talent in the English game and it is up to us as a team and as a country to harness that talent, develop it and ensure that we have a good team going forward. We have some time between today and the next game. “We’ll see what happens.”
In the short term, Buttler will return home to spend time with his family, especially his newborn third child, who arrived just before the tournament.
“To be honest, I'm looking forward to taking a break from the game,” he added.
“You can sit here and get emotional after a loss, but there’s no need to get too caught up in it right now.
“I think reaching the semi-finals is an achievement, but we wanted to go all the way. That's why we came here. We did well enough to get to this stage, but unfortunately we fell short.”
