Jos Buttler: England white-ball captain in contention for England T20 series against Australia | Cricket News

Jos Buttler has struggled to recover from a calf injury, raising questions over his availability for England's T20 series against Australia starting next week.

England's white-ball captain missed the entire Hundreds campaign with a calf injury in July, but is expected to return to represent Lancashire in this week's Vitality Blast.

However, Red Rose head coach Dale Benkenstein has revealed Buttler will miss out on Wednesday's quarter-final clash with Sussex. Sky Sports, And they are racing against time to be available for the first T20 against Australia on September 11.

“We've had some bad news about his recovery,” Benkenstein told BBC Radio Lancashire. “He had an injury that he was recovering from and he's twisted it again.

England's interim white-ball manager Marcus Trescothick has said he will find out how much he enjoys the role before making a decision on his future and admits there is no hard and fast plan.

“I think not only has he been ruled out of our T20s, he's also struggling to get into international play.

“He wanted to play for us. Jos contacted us to prepare for the quarter-finals but he will not be with us.”

England are said to be relaxed about the situation and will expect Buttler to be ready to lead a revamped squad for the full duration of Australia's limited-overs tour this month, which comprises three T20s and five ODIs.

With Phil Salt expected to keep wicket as Buttler moves closer to his bowlers to pass on advice, his chances are likely to improve assuming he gives up one of his primary duties in T20s.

Buttler has not played any competitive cricket since the T20 World Cup semi-final defeat to India on June 27, but has been given the backing of Rob Key to continue as captain.
