Josh Kerr beat Jakob Ingebrigtsen to victory in the mile race at the Diamond League meet in Eugene, breaking Steve Cram's 39-year-old national record.
The Scottish athlete won his much-anticipated showdown with Norwegian rival Ingebrigtsen by setting a world-leading time of 3 minutes 45.34 seconds.
Cram has held the British record of 3:46.32 since 1985.
Olympic 1500m champion Ingebrigtsen, who was shocked by Kerr at last year's World Championships in Budapest, finished second, while Britons Neil Gourley and Jake Wightman took fourth and fifth respectively. I did.

“I want to be in peak condition in August,” said the Tokyo 2020 silver medalist. “Running 56 seconds in May is a step towards that. It’s very promising.”
Elsewhere, Kenya's Beatrice Chebet set a new world record in the women's 10,000m with a time of 28:54.14.
