“We had a good relationship. I would like to thank him for taking the time to come for dinner,” said Sir Keir.
“We’ve had good, constructive discussions, and of course, as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, we will work with whoever the American people return to the presidency in what is now a very close election.”
Sir Keir did not meet Trump’s Democratic rival, Vice President Harris.
However, he has met President Biden several times since becoming prime minister last July.
Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Reid said it was “not unusual” for British volunteers to campaign in US elections.
“It is up to the individual how they spend their time and money, and it is not uncommon for supporters of one political party in one country to campaign for a sister party in another. This happens both ways, in many countries.
“But none of this has been organized or funded by Labor itself. These are freely chosen by individuals.”
Reid highlighted the UK’s “long special relationship” with the US, adding that a Labor government would “work closely with whomever the American people elect as president in November”.
He said Sir Keir had a “very useful and polite dinner” with President Trump in New York last month, in addition to meeting President Biden at the White House.
