Leftovers: Bacardi partners with Tipsy Scoop | Utz launches cheese and cinnamon-flavored snacks

Leftovers is a look at some of the product ideas that pop up everywhere. Some are interesting, some are surprising, and some are ideas we would never have imagined. We can't write about everything we're presented with, so here are a few leftover ideas that we pulled from our inbox.

Bacardi is drunk

Bacardi is cooling off this summer with a collaboration with Tipsy Scoop.

The alcohol-infused ice cream brand has created a limited-edition sorbet flavor, Bacardi Ocho Guava Daiquiri, to celebrate Rum Month in August. It’s available at all Tipsy Scoop locations and is shipped nationwide by Goldbelly. It’s said to combine Bacardi with the tropical sweetness of guava.

Bacardi said the collaboration not only celebrates Rum Month, but also highlights Bacardi’s versatility and creative potential by offering fun and innovative ways to enjoy the drink.

“By incorporating our most beloved aged rum, BACARDÍ Reserva Ocho, into our classic daiquiri cocktail recipe bursting with guava flavor, we’re adding the perfect summer twist and celebrating Rum Month in a fun and innovative way,” said Lisa Pfenning, vice president of Bicardi North America, in a statement.

“This collaboration not only showcases the diversity and rich heritage of BACARDÍ Reserva Ocho, but is also an opportunity to connect with consumers in a fun and refreshing way,” she said.

Frozen drinks have proven to be an attractive way for brands to enter new categories outside of traditional liquid beverages, while still maintaining the alcohol craze that many people have come to consume in the first place.

Bacardi isn’t the first major alcohol brand to enter the frozen space. This year alone, Molson Coors’ Blue Moon and Diageo-owned Guinness have entered the ice cream market, the latter as part of a collaboration with Tipsy Scoop. And in 2021, Dogfish Head teamed up with Tipsy Scoop to create a non-dairy oat milk ice cream infused with Hazy-O! Brew.

Utz Introduces New Zapp Flavors

Snack brand Utz believes the new product will add a unique and bold feel to its festive Zapp's lineup, and aims to capture the tart flavors of New Orleans.

The company has launched two new products: Big Cheese Chips with cheddar cheese, sour cream and Cajun seasoning, and sweet Cinnamon & Sugar Pretzel Sticks.

“We’ve put our own twist on the classic pretzel and chip, adding a unique New Orleans kick with maximum flavor,” Stacy Schultz, Utz’s senior vice president of marketing, said in a statement. “Whether it’s the salty, complex crunch that Big Cheezy delivers or the salty-sweet combo of Sweet Cinnamon & Sugar we’re adding to our Sinfully-Seasoned Pretzel Stix line, we aim to spark curiosity and deliver the unique snacking that Zapp’s is known for.”

These snacks are available at grocery stores and convenience stores nationwide in addition to the Utz website.

Zapp's New Orleans Kettle Style Potato Chips were introduced in 1985 and sold to Pennsylvania-based Utz in 2011. Other chip flavors include Spicy Cajun Crawtators, Hotter 'n Hot Jalapeño, and Voodoo Heat.

Utz has maintained a loyal customer base for decades, but now faces competition from healthier options in the snack category, including Popchips, owned by the company that Utz sold two of its brands to earlier this year.

Other snack brands have taken advantage of unique, trendy flavors to innovate. In April, Kettle Brand chips introduced a flavor based on gochujang, a sweet and spicy fermented tomato condiment popular in Korea.

Bob's Red Mill Expands Pancake and Waffle Blends

Bob's Red Mill expands its pancake and waffle mix line with a new signature blend.

The new varieties, Homestyle Buttermilk, Chocolate Chip & Banana, and White Chocolate & Strawberry, are all available now. The Buttermilk variety is available at your local retailer, while the Chocolate Chip & Banana and White Chocolate & Strawberry are available exclusively at Walmart.

The mix is made with just water, and as with all of our products, each mix is made with high-quality ingredients and no unnecessary additives,” Blake Isaac, director of innovation and marketing, said in a statement.

The company said innovation has been key to its growth since its founding.

When Bob Moore and his wife Charlie founded Bob's Red Mill in 1978, their goal was to provide healthy whole grain ingredients to the public.

In early 2023, the company hired Porter Long, a Chobani veteran who had a major influence on the “Flipped Program,” to lead research and development.

The company has also benefited from shifting consumer demand toward more whole-grain, whole-food ingredients.

“With 73 percent of home cooks preferring recipes with shorter ingredient lists, (the blend) will be the essential shortcut for easy, convenient breakfasts that taste homemade in every bite,” the company said in a statement.

Ingredients include a flour mixture of wheat and barley, tapioca flour, sugar buttermilk powder, baking soda, and sea salt.
