Father-of-one Payne, 31, has been one of the most recognizable names in pop since appearing on The X Factor and finding fame with 2010s boy band One Direction.
Argentine authorities have been investigating Payne’s final days at the CasaSur hotel.
After the singer’s death, police found substances in his hotel room and destroyed his belongings and furniture. As previously reported, hotel staff called emergency services twice to report that a guest who had “had too many drugs and alcohol” was “making a mess all over the room”.
on Thursday The prosecutor’s office said that a toxicology test found traces of alcohol, cocaine, and prescription antidepressants in his body.
The autopsy revealed that the cause of his death was ‘multiple trauma’ and ‘internal and external bleeding’ caused by a fall from the hotel balcony.
According to the prosecutor’s office, medical reports indicate Payne may have been semi- or fully unconscious.
Prosecutors concluded that this ruled out the possibility of conscious or voluntary action on Payne’s part and that he did not know what he was doing and did not understand it.
Authorities also conducted nine raids on homes in Buenos Aires.
They are also continuing their investigation into Payne’s damaged laptop and other seized devices.
Prosecutors added that they examined more than 800 hours of video from security cameras at the hotel and public roads and received dozens of testimonies from hotel employees, family members, friends and medical experts.
The singer’s body was handed over to his family on Wednesday for return to the UK.
