The International Cricket Council (ICC) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) have confirmed cricket’s historic Olympic return to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with England qualifying for the women’s event.

A total of six countries will participate in the men’s and women’s T20 competitions, with Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania all guaranteed representation.

The five qualifying spots for each event will be determined through a combination of existing ICC events and ICC T20I rankings.

The top six and final rankings for both men’s and women’s events will be decided through a new ICC Olympic qualifier to be held in 2027.

In the women’s game, England (via England), Australia, India and South Africa have already qualified for the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup thanks to their highest placings in the Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania regions.

Qualifying countries can choose from a squad of 15 players, with the teams divided into three groups. Each team will play each other once and then play two additional matches against teams from the same group.

The final top two finishers will compete for gold and silver medals, while the third and fourth highest ranked countries will compete for bronze medals.

A total of 28 matches will be played in both the men’s and women’s divisions, with all matches taking place at Pomona’s specially built cricket stadium.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah said: “Cricket’s return to the Olympics is a landmark moment for our sport and a powerful opportunity to showcase the best of cricket to the world.

“Confirmation of this qualifying route is an important step towards Los Angeles 2028 and provides our members around the world with a clear and exciting path to the Olympic stage.

“The Olympic Games represent the pinnacle of multi-discipline sport and the inclusion of cricket in LA28 will inspire athletes and fans everywhere.

“This is a historic moment and one of the great opportunities for our members as we continue to grow the game and introduce it to new audiences around the world.”
