Mr Mangione was denied bail for a second time on Tuesday. Prosecutors said he was too dangerous to be released.

The judge then gave prosecutors 30 days to request a warrant from New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to secure his extradition to New York.

Hochul said he would provide one later. “I am cooperating with the District Attorney’s Office and will be signing the governor’s warrant request to ensure this man is brought to justice and held accountable,” she said.

The defense also has two weeks to file a motion opposing Mr. Mangione’s transfer to New York. Pennsylvania prosecutors described the challenge as “creating more hoops to jump through.”

Mr. Mangione looked around at the reporters lined up in the courtroom and smiled at times. At one point he interrupted his lawyer, who quickly silenced him.

After the hearing Tuesday afternoon, his attorney, Thomas Dickey, spoke with reporters outside the courtroom. “We cannot make hasty judgments in this case or any other case,” he said. “He is presumed innocent. Don’t forget that.”

Mr. Mangione has been charged with several crimes in Pennsylvania, including providing false identification to police and carrying an unlicensed firearm. He is being held in a Pennsylvania state prison and plans to plead not guilty.

In New York, he faces separate charges, including murder, for the Dec. 4 killing of Mr. Thompson.
