2024 began with questions about the Kansas City Chiefs and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The dismal Christmas loss to division rival Las Vegas Raiders was their fifth in eight games, leaving the reigning champions with a 9-6 record on the year. A 15-game winning streak spanning the playoffs earned them their fourth Super Bowl visit and third title in five seasons, and they start the 2024 campaign 9-0.
Mahomes lost his third league MVP award to Lamar Jackson last year, and Saquon Barkley, Josh Allen and possibly Jackson will be overlooked again in 2024. Mahomes is barely cracking the top 10 in the league. The quarterback has both passing yards and touchdowns this season.
But this is a Chiefs offense that is limping along without its usual offensive weapons to aid Mahomes’ brilliance. And he still rallied to his ninth straight division title, a record surpassed only by the great New England Patriots dynasty (2009-2019) in the 21st century.
Plus, Mahomes is at his best in the clutch. Just like when overcoming the loss to Kansas City at the end of last year. They played in January, and coming from a 10-point deficit to the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl, he led his team to their second straight championship.
Now Mahomes and the Chiefs are aiming to hit a ‘triple mark’ that has never been achieved in NFL history. Record him at your peril.
