French President Emmanuel Macron said President Donald Trump’s comments about marriage were “neither elegant nor up to standard.”
The US president claimed Macron’s wife, Brigitte Macron, had treated her husband “very badly” during a national address on the Iran war in Washington.
“He’s still recovering on the right side of his jaw,” Trump said, referring to a 2025 video that appeared to show the moment his wife shoved Macron in the face.
“It’s just a joke,” the French president said at the time.
In a speech Wednesday, Trump recalled asking Macron for French help in the Gulf region. Previously, France had been accused of not helping the war against Iran.
On strategic issues, the French president said the Trump administration is constantly sending out opposing signals.
“There is so much talk, it is spreading everywhere, but we all need stability, tranquility and a return to peace,” he said.
