
“Early this morning a group of terrorists attempted to infiltrate the military police station in Palacio,” the military said in a statement.
The security ministry said the school was one of several “sensitive locations” that were “targeted in terrorist attacks” in the early hours of the morning.
There was no mention of casualties, but two security forces told news agency AFP that they were wounded in the attack.
The Ministry of Security and Public Security has assured residents that they can continue to operate as normal after the attack, while international organizations such as the United Nations have reportedly advised their staff to limit their movements.
Footage posted earlier on social media showed black smoke rising from parts of the city.
People heading to the mosque for morning prayers were forced to turn back when gunfire rang out, Reuters reported.
Bamako’s Modibo Keita International Airport was closed following the attack.
The military, which seized power in a 2021 coup, has accused the government of failing to do enough to quell the rebellion.
The military has driven out French and UN peacekeepers and brought in Russian Wagner Group to fight the jihadists, but there is no sign of an end to the rebellion.
