Organizers said 23 runners from seven countries took part in the event, dubbed “the world’s greatest marathon”, in the geographic North Pole of the Arctic.
The race was run on drifting sea ice in the geographic North Pole of the Arctic, with participants arriving from Norway aboard the French polar ship Le Commandant Charcot.
Wearing thermal gear and life jackets as safety requirements, they disembarked the boat to do a 1,055-metre loop over the ice, while armed guards kept watch for polar bears nearby.
In the women’s division, Denmark’s Rikke Dam won the championship with a time of 6 hours, 54 minutes and 02 seconds, and in the men’s division, Wang Shengxian (China) won the championship with a time of 3 hours, 52 minutes and 22 seconds. Organizers said the course was cleared of ice just hours after the race ended.
