Marco Rubio calls a world without borders a ‘foolish idea.’
Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized the concept of unified global citizenship at the Munich Security Conference but said the United States and Europe “belong together” as one civilization.

Thank you, thank you. Thank you very much. The euphoria of this victory has led us to the dangerous delusion that we have entered the “end of history.” Now all countries will be liberal democracies. Bonds formed solely by trade and commerce will now replace national character. The rule-based global order, an overused term, will now replace national interests, and we will now live in a borderless world where everyone is a citizen of the world. This was a foolish idea that ignored all human nature and ignored the lessons of human history recorded over more than 5,000 years. And it has cost us dearly. And in our pursuit of a world without borders, we have opened the door to an unprecedented wave of mass migration that threatens the cohesion of our societies, the continuity of our cultures, and the future of our people. Under President Trump, America will once again be tasked with renewal and restoration, with a vision for a future that is as proud, sovereign, and important as our civilization’s past. We are prepared to do this alone if necessary, but it is our preference and hope to do this together with you, our friends here in Europe. For America and Europe we are one.
