Former Tottenham and England striker Martin Chivers has died aged 80.
Tottenham players will wear black armbands for Wednesday’s game at Bournemouth.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of former legendary striker Martin Chivers,” the club said in a statement.
“We send our deepest condolences to Martin’s family, friends and former team-mates at this incredibly sad time. “Our players will be wearing black armbands against AFC Bournemouth this evening.
“Rest in peace, Martin. One of the greatest players of all time.”
Chivers led the attack for Bill Nicholson’s Spurs teams from the early 1970s, winning the League Cup twice and enjoying UEFA Cup success in 1972.
After starting his career at Southampton and helping the Saints to promotion to the top flight under Ted Bates in 1966, he moved to White Hart Lane in January 1968 for a then club and UK record fee of £125,000.
After recovering from a serious knee injury, he became a key member of the Spurs team, reaching four finals over the course of as many years.
He scored both goals in the League Cup win over Aston Villa at Wembley in 1971, helping Spurs to a third-place finish in the old First Division.
Chivers scored a memorable long-range goal in the first leg of the 1972 UEFA Cup Final against Wolves, which Spurs won 3–2 on aggregate.
The 1972–73 season saw Chivers score 33 goals as Spurs lifted the League Cup once again with a 1–0 win over Norwich and also reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, where they lost to Liverpool on the away goals rule.
Chivers scored 13 goals in 24 appearances for England. His final game was a 1-1 draw with Poland at Wembley, where a memorable performance from goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski helped Sir Alf Ramsey’s side deny qualification to the 1974 World Cup.
After scoring 174 goals in 367 appearances for Spurs, Chivers left ahead of the 1976–1977 season to join Swiss club Servette.
Chivers later returned to action at Norwich in England and then briefly at Brighton, managed by his former Spurs teammate Alan Mullery, before working as player-manager at Southern League Dorchester. Chivers also played for Norwegian side Vard and played 10 games for Barnet in 1982-83.
He remained a regular at Tottenham home games and was a member of the club’s Matchday Legends Hospitality team.
