According to a report from the Swedish Veterinary Agency (SVA), there will be a large-scale foodborne outbreak of salmonella and listeria in Sweden in 2025.
In August 2025, a salmonella outbreak resulted in 118 illnesses in 14 regions. The outbreak was traced to a laying hen farm and eggs from this farm were recalled once the pathogen was confirmed to be Salmonella Enteritidis. Through whole genome sequencing, SVA confirmed that the strain was identical to the one discovered in 2024 and that the outbreak occurred in 2022/2023. Salmonella Enteritidis is difficult to eradicate once it enters a laying hen facility. Despite measures such as culling and large-scale decontamination in 2024, the same strain was detected in 2025.
