Highlights from South Africa's 33-7 win over Australia in their first match of the 2024 Rugby Championship
South Africa recorded their biggest ever win over Australia at their own stadium, winning 33-7 in Brisbane in their first match of the 2024 Rugby Championship, with Kurt-Lee Arendse scoring two tries.
The Springboks, who have brought in New Zealand attack coach Tony Brown to help them play a more flexible game, scored five tries against Joe Schmidt's Australia side, with Siya Kolisi, Peter-Stephen du Toit and Quagga Smith also on target.
South Africa beat Australia by 26 points in Brisbane in 2013, winning 38-12 there.
The Wallabies' only try on Saturday came from Hunter Paisami after South Africa were reduced to 13 men following yellow cards for Malcolm Marks and Marco van Staden.
Australia will look to bounce back next weekend when they host South Africa at Optus Stadium in Perth.
Australia conceded five tries as South Africa held on to a convincing win in Brisbane.
Springboks captain Kolisi dominated the scrum and led 21-0 at half-time, saying: “We said as a team this was a big win for us. I'm proud of the players.
“We stuck to our game plan this week. We're a learning team. Coach Tony (Brown) is trying to get us to play differently on offense.
“When you're on top you have to take your chances and we lost a few lineouts in key areas. That's an area we need to improve on.”
'South Africa sucks up Australia's energy'
“You have to give credit to South Africa, they came out and put pressure on us,” said Australia captain Allan Ala-Alatoa after their first defeat under coach Schmidt.
“We didn't have the ball for most of the first half. It's a tough learning curve for our group, but we have to regroup and get going again.”
“They are an incredibly strong team, an experienced team, and they won the physical battle,” Schmidt said of South Africa.
“Their penetration was really strong and in the first half they had the upper hand in possession and territory, which weakened the players a bit.
“I wish we could have gotten a little more out of the game, but we had a benchmark and it wasn't a huge shock to us where the Springboks were.
“That's where we need to go.”
