My years of experience working in the fashion industry and teaching fashion design at some of the best schools in the country all boil down to one important truth: The thing is, it all starts with mastering the sloper. So what exactly is a sloper? Think of it as a basic template, a starting point for creating virtually any design. Whether you call them slopers, blocks or moulages, they are the quiet workhorses of the design process and your own team of foot soldiers.

A versatile sloper library typically includes five pieces: a basic bodice, straight sleeves, a basic straight skirt, a torso sloper, and a trouser sloper. Each serves as a building block ready to be transformed into endless design possibilities.

In this lesson, you will learn about the different types of muslin and how to properly prepare the blocks, including cutting, blocking, marking, and pressing. We also address the importance of fabric grain, allowing us to create balanced, professional quality garments in every design.

The most commonly made slopers through the draping process are the bodice, torso, and basic straight skirt. In contrast, sleeves and trouser slopers are generally more efficient to develop using flat pattern drafting methods rather than draping.
