Meta has abruptly halted a new feature that allowed people to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to create fake images from user content on Instagram.
The feature was part of a broader rollout of Muse Image, a new AI image creation tool that launched Wednesday as part of the company’s chatbot, Meta AI.
This allowed Meta AI users to tag public accounts on Instagram and quickly use content from those accounts to create AI-generated or altered content and images.
The feature quickly backfired. So much so that Meta now admits it is “out of bounds and can no longer be used.”
“Our intention was to provide useful creative tools and give people control over whether their public content can be referenced in this way,” Meta added in its decision to withdraw the feature. “We listened to the feedback.”
When Meta announced the feature a few days ago, it said it was limited to Instagram, but that more AI features and integrations are planned for WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger.
We are also developing AI video tools.
