Formula 1 is back after more than a month off, with a sprint weekend in Miami as the 2026 season resumes.
Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers’ championship after back-to-back wins in China and Japan, nine points ahead of Mercedes team-mate George Russell.
Mercedes has won each of the three opening races so far, but rule changes and a five-week break could change the standings as all teams bring upgrades to Miami.
Ferrari and McLaren will hope to close the gap on Mercedes as Lando Norris returns to the track where he won his first Grand Prix in 2024.
Oscar Piastri almost stopped Mercedes’ winning streak in Japan last time out, but the timing of the safety car was disappointing. At the same time, the fast-starting Ferraris should also feature at the front of the field, giving Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton another chance at a podium finish.
Max Verstappen is only ninth in the standings and recently revealed that he is considering his future in F1, so it will be interesting to see what he thinks of the power unit rule changes and whether he is still serious about his threat to quit.
Because it is a sprint event, we jump straight into sprint qualifying on Friday night and only have one practice session before competing in Miami for the rest of the weekend.
Due to the five-week gap since the last race, Friday’s practice session has been extended to 90 minutes rather than the usual hour and will start at 5pm UK time.
Miami GP Track – Miami International Speedway
Miami has joined the F1 calendar in 2022 and the track layout offers plenty of good opportunities for overtaking, with turns 11 and 17 moving at the end of the long straight.
Because it is a street circuit, the walls are close and mistakes are punished. But to increase your speed, you have to face barriers.
Miami GP weather forecast
The weather in Miami is currently expected to be dry and hot, with no rain expected for the sprint weekend races. Temperatures will be around 28C over the three days – Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
