Michael Van Gerwen wins Hungarian Darts Trophy: “I still have a love for darts” | Darts News

Michael van Gerwen ended his 16-month PDC European Tour drought and claimed the 2024 Hungarian Darts Trophy title with a commanding 8-7 win over Jan van Veen in Budapest on Sunday.

The Dutch superstar claimed his 36th European Tour title at the Belgian Darts Trophy in May 2023, extending his impressive tally in a thrilling final at the MVM Dome.

Van Veen was aiming for a maiden senior PDC title but the youngster was left regretting missing one match dart at the Bulls, with Van Gerwen claiming victory with a 110 checkout in the final.

“It was really important, I had to fight really hard,” Van Gerwen admitted. “I struggled in the final and Gian took advantage of it, but I fought myself more.

“The crowd gave me so much energy and I’m so happy I could give something back to them.

“I feel like I’m on the right track, especially with the new darts. I’ve been missing that winning feeling for a long time, but now everything is falling into place.

“I want to win more, my love for the game is still there. I have to keep this momentum going.”

“I’m only 22 and to be able to push Michael van Gerwen like this in the final is an incredible feeling, but of course it’s disappointing,” said Van Veen.

“Match darts, I missed the 118 in the bull. I think it was really close. But Michael’s 110 shows his class. He is the deserved winner today and congratulations.”
