Mika Stojsavljevic: 15-year-old US Open women’s champion denied first WTA title with thriller loss to Moyoka Uchijima | tennis news

15-year-old British prospect Mika Stojsavljevic lost 6-4 6-7(7-9) 7-6(8-6) to Moyukawa Uchijima in a thrilling match in Tokyo to become the all-time WTA champion. I was denied my first win.

Stojsavljevic is the reigning US Open women’s champion, but suffered a tough draw at the Pan Pacific Open against Japan’s Uchijima, ranked 57th in the world. This is 576 places higher than her in the WTA rankings.

The teenager, who stopped serve in all three sets, saved a total of five match points in the first round before ultimately succumbing to the sixth.

Stojsavljevic won the Women’s US Open at Flushing Meadows, beating Sonobe Wakana in straight sets.

Three of the match points were saved in the second set as Stojsavljevic fought back to take a 9-7 tiebreak to force a decider.

The Englishman broke out of the blocks in the third set to take a 5-2 lead, but broke when he served for the match before Uchijima took the decisive tie-break and the match was right down. 3 hours in court.

Had she won, Stojsavljevic would have moved up nearly 200 places in the WTA rankings and secured a second-round meeting with top seed and Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng.

Stojsavljevic was very happy after defeating Sonobe Wakana to win the US Open earlier this year.
