Mohamed Salah: Liverpool will leave Premier League club at end of season | soccer news

Mohamed Salah is set to leave Liverpool at the end of this season.

Liverpool have revealed they have reached an agreement with the legendary striker to become a free agent after this season, ending his “amazing” nine-year stay at Anfield.

Salah’s contract, which he only signed last April, is set to be shortened by a year after a difficult season for the 33-year-old. This led to his elimination and a public breakup with coach Arne Slott.

The Egyptian, one of Liverpool’s all-time greats, is set to bid his farewell to Anfield against Brentford on May 24 on the final day of the Premier League season.

“Salah would like to make this announcement to his supporters as soon as possible out of respect and gratitude for them and to provide transparency about his future,” Liverpool said in a statement.

The 33-year-old, who has won all the top trophies with Liverpool, still has plenty to fight for this season and could add more trophies before leaving.

The current Premier League champions will face reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals and Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Liverpool is also aiming to advance to the Champions League through the league. Arne Slott’s side are currently fifth in the table, which is good enough for England with seven games remaining in the race for a fifth qualifying spot.

Salah’s agent said he did not know where his client would play next season.

The Liverpool striker has long been a target for Saudi Arabian clubs and appears to be the most likely destination for Salah, who gave a bombshell interview after being dropped by Leeds earlier this season.

It was less than three years ago that Liverpool rejected a £150m bid for Salah from Saudi club Al Ittihad.

However, Salah’s agent, Rami Abbas, insisted that there had been no agreement with any other clubs. “I don’t know where Mohamed will play next season,” he said on social media. “This also means that no one knows.”

Analysis: What’s next for Salah?

Sky Sports News Chief Correspondent Kaveh Solhekol:

“Mohamed Salah leaving will save Liverpool money. You have to remember his salary. He is said to be the highest-paid player in Liverpool’s history, with reports showing he earns between £350,000 and £400,000 per week.

“Salah is still an incredible player, but is he in his prime? He’s 33 now and turns 34 in June. Did Liverpool really want to keep paying him that kind of money until the summer of 2027?

“Behind the scenes, his representatives have sat down with Liverpool and reached an agreement that suits all parties, which means he can continue to play for Liverpool until the end of the season.”

“I think it is too early to say for sure he will go to Saudi Arabia. I know several clubs in Saudi Arabia will be interested in signing him.”

“Al Ittihad made a verbal offer of £150m for 2023, which Liverpool rejected. MLS clubs also want him, but I think there will be plenty of options for him.

“There will be Premier League clubs interested in signing him, as well as European clubs.

“A year or so ago there was a possibility that he would play for another Premier League club and options were being explored, but of course things are different now.

“For a long time a year or so ago it looked like he was going to leave Liverpool and they weren’t particularly keen on offering him a new contract, but he had an incredible season, scoring 28/29 goals and Liverpool winning the title.

“I think Liverpool are backed into a corner where they feel they have to give him a new contract.”

Mohamed Salah is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the 2025/26 season, and we’re taking a look back at some of his defining moments in the Premier League.

Salah said he wanted to inform supporters as soon as possible of the opportunity to provide transparency about his future out of respect and gratitude towards them.

“No. 11, who joined from AS Roma in the summer of 2017, has firmly established himself as one of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history, helping the club win two Premier League titles, a Champions League, a FIFA Club World Cup, a UEFA Super Cup, an FA Cup, two League Cups as well as the FA Community Shield.

“With 255 goals in 435 appearances to date, the Egyptian ranks third in United’s all-time top scorers chart and has won the Premier League Golden Boot four times, in addition to individual awards.

“With many games still left to play this season, Salah is committed to completing Liverpool’s campaign in the best possible light. So the time to fully celebrate his legacy and achievements will come later in the year when he bids farewell to Anfield.”

Salah’s full farewell statement

In a video released on social media, Salah said:

“Unfortunately the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.”

“I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined that this club, this city and these people would be a part of my life.

“Liverpool is more than just a football club. It’s passion. It’s history. It’s a spirit that words can’t explain to anyone who isn’t part of this club.”

“We celebrated victories, won the most important trophies and fought together through the most difficult times of our lives.

“I would like to thank everyone who has been a part of this club during my time here, especially my team-mates, past and present and the fans.

“Words cannot say it enough. The support you have shown me during the best times of my career and being there for me through the hardest times is something I will never forget and will always be with me.

“Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you. “This club will always be home to me and my family. Thank you for everything.

“Thanks to you, I will never walk alone.”

Your view: ‘Salah will make a huge mistake’

J.G.: He wasn’t the same player as last season. With Slot’s explosive performance a few months ago, we think now is the right time. Became a legend for the club and league YNWA.

steve ez: The best winger in the league. It took him four seasons less than Wayne Rooney to break his own scoring total record. Absolute phenomenon. You will miss it. Form doesn’t last forever, but greatness does. Thank you for everything.

Andy: Perhaps it is time for Salah to leave at the end of the season, but he will be greatly missed at this football club. A star replacement is definitely needed next season.

mike: Suitable for all parties. He’s been a shadow of himself, which hasn’t helped his poor performance this season. He will go down as one of the greatest players of all time and he will leave with a grateful heart from his fans.
