More than 50 immigrants died when a boat, which had about 150 people in bad weather on Sunday, sank on the Yemen coast.
According to local authorities, the ship disappeared from the southern Abbacia region of Yemen, rescued only 10, and dozens of people were still missing.
Many victims are regarded as Ethiopian citizens, the International Immigration Organization (IOM) called this incident as “heartbreaking.”
Yemen remains a major path where migrants travel to the Gulf of the Gulf of the African horns, and the IOM estimates that hundreds of people have died or missed on the shipwreck in recent months.
IOM YEMEN ABDUSATTOTOR ESOEV, chief representative of the Associated Press, said that the body of 54 immigrants was found to be a land in southern Canfa, and 14 other immigrants were taken to the hospital’s hospital room in the province of Avian.
According to APLISS Press, ABYAN Security Directorate issued a statement on large -scale search and rescue missions, according to the Associated Press that many bodies were found on a large coastline.
A spokesman of the IOM said the institution was “deep mourning” by “tragic life loss” and emphasized the need for more protection for immigrants.
“This heartbreaking event emphasizes urgent need for enhanced protective mechanisms for dangerous travelers, and is often promoted by immoral smugglers who use despair and vulnerability.”
The IOM previously described the journey from African horns to Yemen as “one of the busiest mixed mixed migration lines.”
In March, two boats with more than 180 immigrants sank on the coast of the DHUBAB district, rescued only two crew members, and all the remaining passengers died and feared.
According to the IOM report, immigrants who arrived at Yemen’s immigrant response point also reported that people were more reckless by deliberately dispatching boats in dangerous conditions to avoid patrols.
Despite the danger, many immigrants continue to travel, and more than 60,000 people arrived in Yemen in 2024.
In the last decade, IOM’s missing immigrant projects have recorded more than 3,400 deaths and those who have died along the route. 1,400 of them are due to drowning.
