Ukraine’s attempted attack on Moscow was the largest attack on the capital since the war began, and a regional governor described it as “massive”.
Officials said most of the drones were shot down in the Ramenskoye, Kolomna and Domodedovo regions.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said five people were injured and four houses caught fire after falling debris in Ramenskoye, southwest of Moscow. He added that 34 drones were shot down over the village.
In September, a woman was killed in a drone strike that struck Ramenskoye. In May last year, two drones were destroyed near the Kremlin in central Moscow, and there were several drone attacks in commercial districts in downtown Moscow.
In Ukraine, a drone struck the Odessa region, injuring at least two people. Video showed flames rising from some buildings and damage in the aftermath.
The Ukrainian Air Force said 62 of Russia’s Iranian-made drones were shot down and 67 were lost. It added that the teenagers were leaving Ukrainian airspace and heading to Russia and neighboring Belarus and Moldova.
The drone strikes came as Russian forces reportedly made their largest territorial gains in October since March 2022, according to an AFP analysis of War Institute data.
But British Army Chief of Staff Sir Tony Radakin told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg program on Sunday that Russia had suffered its worst month of casualties since the outbreak of war.
Russian forces averaged about 1,500 deaths and injuries “every day” in October, he said.
