The biggest new products this year are a quilted liner for the Donegal coat, a handful of Donegals in brown and charcoal archive colours, and a Donegal Special made from heavy Fox Brothers wool.
On the knitwear side, the Cashmere Crewneck and Cashmere Rugby are each available at MTO in seven colors, with a few new colors added as well.
The great thing about the MTO system is that it can offer such a wide range of colors and very small and large sizes. This is because there is too much inventory to transport. PS More patience and discernment on the part of readers means more choices.
However, to make it clear that this is a custom order and cannot be exchanged or refunded, we are changing the name from Pre-Order to MTO. They don’t have to be made any other way and, unlike chinos’ pre-orders, which are a way to reserve upcoming stock, they’re just for that customer. If that’s not clear at all, scream.
Donegal Liner
I’ll start with the liner because I love how whimsical it is. No other brand offers a product like this.
Hundreds of people have Donegal coats. Some people have pointed out that while it is a very versatile piece of outerwear, it would be nice if it could be worn in really cold weather, say when it gets down to below freezing.
The only logical way to do this would be to sell a removable liner that attaches to the coat with buttons and send these to your readers with the buttons included. You will then need a local alterations tailor who can attach the buttons in the correct position. Or you can actually sew it yourself. Because it’s not difficult (I can do it too).
No other brand offers this because it demands too much from its customers. But the obvious alternative of everyone sending their coats back to the factory would be prohibitively expensive. Again, PS readers benefit from being a little more engaged and putting in a little more effort.
How much alterations tailors charge to carry out this varies, but to mark the high end, The Valet in London says they will do it for £80.
The lining is made from the same material as the existing coat lining, with wool filling quilted inside. We specifically chose wool filling because it performs much better than synthetic fibers.
Wool is warm and responds thermodynamically to body temperature, regulating changes in moisture and activity. When used as a filler, it reduces humidity inside the coat, helping you stay warm during activities such as walking quickly or moving between hot and cold locations.
Some readers will be asking how much space is needed for the liner and therefore whether it can fit inside an existing Donegal. Well, the liner is 6mm thick and fits inside my size 4 coat, so it’s perfect for me. I took a video Comparing it to size 5, I think I can wear it in either size.
Also, keep in mind that the liner only runs around the body of the coat and about halfway down the shoulders, not over the arms. It does not make the shoulders or sleeves smaller.
The liner has two patch pockets on the chest for easy access, as well as a larger pocket on the left hip. You can order from PS Shop’s MTO page. There are currently no plans to secure future inventory.
Donegals
The liner is pictured inside this year’s Donegal Special Edition. Made of heavy navy wool from Fox Brothers.
We started this special edition with W Bill camel hair last year and it went very well. The camels sold out within a week, and people have been asking about them ever since. Again, MTO allows us, like Fox, to offer more colors and more expensive fabrics to Donegal.
The material we chose this year is CT15 Fox’s Midnight Heavy Set Wool wears warmer than its 26-ounce weight due to its set and flannel-like finish. Lucas sampled this suit last fall and it’s a beast, easily warmer than most of his other clothes and keeping him warm all winter long.
So it’s quite a different product than the lightweight navy one we introduced a few years ago. It’s less shiny, has less of a business coat feel (though it’s still pretty smart), and is much warmer. The Fox Special Edition is only available during the MTO period.
This final offering of MTO’s Donegal coats comes in four archive colours: charcoal, brown, mid gray (also known as black/white) and a lighter navy.
We get a few requests for archival colors every year, so we added up all the smaller lengths from various suppliers (The Valet, Lafayette Saltiel, Private White, mywardrobe) and found enough colors for about 15 charcoal coats, 8 dark browns, and 20 lightweight navy.
Of these, the only one that will be in stock in the fall is the mid-gray Dogal, but if you want to secure your size now, you can order that too. Except for lightweight navy 680g, the standard weight of all fabrics is 760g.
knit
Knitwear is simpler. The two standard PS styles are the same and the colors are the same as last year. The only differences are that the Crewneck adds a new color, Oatmeal, and the Rugby adds two colors: Charcoal and Dark Olive. Above are the new colors.
Other colors available for MTO of crewnecks are: Navy, gray, charcoal, black, sky blue, lavender. Only navy and gray are available in the fall.
Other colors available for MTO in rugby are navy, grey, brown, black and swan. Navy, gray, and natural will be available in the fall.
As most readers are well aware, the cashmere crewneck is our version of the basic garment, while the rugby is slightly more unusual, a dense heavyweight rarely offered these days, but one we wanted to bring back. All colors are shown below.
The comfortable shawl collar cardigan is not available at MTO this year and may be discontinued. If you’ve been thinking about one for a while, it might be a good idea to get one in stock now.

These items are all available now. MTO page This is what the PS store looks like. Available until April 26th. Payment can be made in full or half upon order and half upon delivery.
The knits will be delivered in early October, and the Donegal and liners will be delivered at the end of the month. They both set aside time for when they needed it most.
