My Sextortion Diary: 'Hackers Leaked Intimate Photos After My Laptop Was Stolen'

Taking, storing and sending nude photos is completely normal for an entire generation that grew up with the internet.

But this opens up a world of risks that people born in the past few decades have never faced.

“My father took pictures of my mother in a swimsuit that was slightly transparent.” Frankesa smiled as he recalled a time that seemed relatively innocent. “But since the digital world came to us, it’s a new way to have intimacy.”

In her case, the hackers showed how serious they were by leaking some of the images to her friends, family and colleagues who discovered them through her social media contacts.

However, Franquesa makes some progress as the film progresses. Her police sent her a letter saying they arrested her after examining CCTV footage from her cafe. She eventually captures the footage and includes it in the film.

It shows how three men took the laptop. Their faces were blurred for the film and they worked together in different locations within the cafe.

But despite the ongoing police investigation, hackers are continuing their attempts to extort her.

Exhausted, out of options, and refusing to pay, Franquesa eventually decides to upload the images to his social media. This is a terrible last resort, but it takes away the hacker's power.

“It was hard. I was crying,” she recalls. “It was like the last minute of a marathon. I didn’t even want to post a picture, I was hoping and waiting for this guy to stop, and when I saw he didn’t stop, I couldn’t do it anymore.”
