Namibia may soon require visas for US visitors: Travel Weekly

Americans planning to travel to Namibia may soon need to obtain a visa before traveling. The Namibian government has decided to enforce visa requirements for citizens of more than 30 countries, including the United States, and will no longer grant visa waivers if those countries do not offer reciprocal visa waivers.

The proposal by the Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security was recently approved by the Namibian Cabinet. Data from the Namibia Tourism Board shows that countries such as South Africa and Zimbabwe that have reciprocal agreements will not be affected, but visa requirements could affect more than 30 other countries. No specific date has been set for the introduction of the visa.

The SADC Business Council Tourism Alliance has expressed deep concern over the proposed restrictive visa regime, which could seriously hamper Namibia's tourism industry and economic growth. The alliance, a non-profit association dedicated to responsible travel and tourism to and from the Southern African Development Community region, said the policy change appears to contradict Namibia Airports Co.'s recently launched strategy to increase international flights and connectivity. . The implementation of more stringent visa requirements could have a detrimental impact on various sectors of the Namibian economy, including tourism, hospitality, transport and retail, which rely heavily on international visitors.

“A restrictive visa regime could have a negative impact on the entire tourism value chain,” said Natalia Rosa, project lead at the SADC Business Council Tourism Alliance. She said: “It hinders leisure travel as well as business trips, meetings, events, education and trade, limiting overall economic growth and development.”

Rosa urged the Namibian government to reconsider its measures and engage stakeholders, pointing to the success stories of Rwanda and Zambia, where visa liberalization has significantly boosted tourism, foreign investment and economic growth.

This move is amazing. Namibia is one of the first countries to introduce remote work visas in recognition of post-COVID demand. As the SADC region prepares to pilot the Univisa program, changes to Namibia's visa regime are baffling industry observers.
